What are the stakes? What will you lose, you may ask? And what can you win? I'm no critic; more of a curator, perhaps even a closeted capitalist. Most people who inhabit the art world without
making art tend to be. It’s not news that art worlds have become increasingly professionalised here in Stockholm and beyond, and it’s a good thing in many ways. People are getting paid, and others
are running with projects they never imagined possible. A horrible outcome of this is the word ‘artrepreneur’ and a formulaic gradient for success that is all too transparent but not inclusive or
attainable without a silver spoon or a good helping of luck. There is a sense of control that we all flirt with to hold space and survive in a milieu our parents don’t understand. But luck sticks
around whether you deconstruct or reinforce the system. It’s the rabbit's foot and four-leaf clover.
At the centre of it all is the artist. These characters morph between worlds, covered in paint from a dirty day’s work and then polished beyond recognition for the gallery’s opening and a line of
small talk. But artists are a dying breed — especially those who use the gamble and chance imaginaries in their work and are met with insufficiently scaled institutions to feed whims. Whims are important.
I do not denounce artists for their grit; I see it in their flecks and wounds. I love artists. More so, I denounce the rest of us (internally and externally) for demanding the same formats of art and
recreating displays in service of tradition and systematic coherences. Beyond instinct, there is context. I am a migrant from South Africa to Sweden, a student, and a starter. I’m an interloper and
an observer. I’ve worked freelance and contracted for the big, medium, and small. Curators tell me about itemised failures, artists tell me their visions. My two cents is that Stockholm desires absurd and
performative spaces alongside the formalised handful of institutions. But on another level, it has a real inability to foster informal acts of art - in favour of bureaucratic solutions to problems they
do not even have the vocabulary for and funding geared toward locals and neat categories. What about the newcomers, marginal voices looking for a foothold, or injections of difference, and worlds other
than the centre? I’m worried about secularism. I’m concerned about the limits. I say a prayer for the agents of chaos – for artist-run spaces, for Beau Travail, Candyland, Galleri Nef, Flat Octopus,
Galleri NOS, and DotDotDot, to mention a few. I say a eulogy to an application that failed due to my title as curator, not an artist. Perhaps I am criticising. That is a risk in and of itself in such a
small scene. Still, I think there is brimming situationism — one that is generational and should be supported in lieu of the handful of hard institutions in this city, gentrification, and a right-wing
government choking out the sector. I am talking about otherness and multi-platform thinking, about experimentalism and performance led by institutions and curators, not just artists. I’m curious about
playing this game, throwing my hat in the ring, if you will, and testing the limits of what exists. I want to tease how to institute differently and curate with a gambling premise here in Stockholm.

The Centre for the Fictitious Ante Facto is that institutional jackpot — a bingo, a win, and a triple 7-7-7. Its name refers to the experiments or fictions that predate a fact. Its mandate is
trial and error. It is not a solution for all the abovementioned impressions and cultural loitering. Rather, it is a tool, language, or site for examining the ingredients of art worlds and
larger economies of attention. It addresses essential questions of the curatorial, such as the invention of opportunities and a sense of invitation not only for artists but for audiences too.
More specifically, The Centre for the Fictitious Ante Facto is a para-institution and avant-garde white cube space based at Stockholm University. The Centre invites winner and loser situations.
It celebrates public participation and hosts quarterly shows in experimental formats. Its inaugural exhibition, Lucky Number 1 9 5 3 0 2 0 8 with Jens Masimov, is set to open on 29 August at Frescati Campus.
Audiences are invited to participate in the Centre and the works. Playing costs 10 SEK (cash only); with it, there is the chance to win one of the displayed artworks. The mechanics of the centre
are integral to the process - I won’t over-explain or undersell it here.
